Frequently Asked Questions
Press ⌘N or go to File > New. A blank screenplay document opens with the cursor ready at the first line. Start typing -- Screencore handles the formatting automatically based on the element type you select.
Screencore can import Final Draft (.fdx), Fountain (.fountain), plain text (.txt), and rich text (.rtf) files. It exports to PDF, Final Draft (.fdx), Fountain (.fountain), plain text (.txt), rich text (.rtf), and the native Screencore (.screencore) format.
The native .screencore format is the only one that preserves all metadata: notes, alt lines, markup, and revision history. Other formats carry the screenplay text and formatting only.
Press ⌘⇧E or go to File > Export > PDF. Choose your export options (title page, watermark, etc.) and select a save location. The PDF is generated instantly with proper screenplay formatting and pagination.
Writers Room is a real-time collaboration feature that works over your local network. One writer hosts a session, and others on the same network can join. Editing is controlled by "the Pen" -- a token that one writer holds at a time. The current holder can edit the script while everyone else sees changes live.
Guests without the Pen can contribute notes, alt lines, and markup. The host reviews and accepts contributions. All communication is peer-to-peer -- no server, no cloud, no internet required.
See the Writers Room page for a full walkthrough.
No. Screencore stores all files locally on your Mac. There is no cloud sync, no remote storage, and no data transmission of any kind. Your scripts stay on your machine. See our Privacy Policy for details.
First, lock your scene numbers from the Scene Numbers panel. Then open the Revisions panel and enable revision tracking. All edits from that point forward are marked with the current revision color (starting with Blue).
To advance to the next revision set (Pink, then Yellow, etc.), use the Advance Draft button. Revision marks from previous drafts remain visible in their original colors. Screencore follows the WGA-standard 9-color revision cycle.
Yes. Use File > Open and select a .fdx file. Screencore converts the Final Draft XML format to its native format, preserving all element types, formatting, and text content. You can also export back to .fdx for collaborators who use Final Draft.
Go to Settings > Appearance and select a theme. Eight themes are available: Screencore (default), Overcast, Tundra, Deep Ocean, Midnight, Crystal, Daylight, and Birch. Six are dark themes; Daylight and Birch are light. Your selection is saved automatically.
Screencore is currently a macOS-only application. It is built natively for the Mac using AppKit and Core Text for the best possible writing experience. There are no plans for an iOS version at this time.
